Obituary for James S. Farris

James Samuel Farris died on January 13, 2018. He was born on June 29, 1918 in Cheyenne, the oldest son of Floyd and Mary Ann Farris. He was graduated from Cheyenne High School in 1936 and married Edna Elizabeth Hess in 1937. They had three sons, Jay, Grant and Kris, and they were all very active in the Boy Scout program.

He held various jobs around Cheyenne until 1939 when he went to work for Jack Burri in his office supply and books store. Morton Nisbet purchased that store in 1941 and renamed it Nisbet’s Stationery. While Mr. Nisbet was serving in the military during World War II, Jim ran the store for him. When Mr. Nisbet decided to retire in January 1962, Jim purchased the store from him, later re-locating it and renaming it Commercial Office Supply. Jim maintained the store in Cheyenne until 1998, selling office furniture as well as office supplies to the community.

He has been active over the years in Jaycees, Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Development Authority, National Office Products Association, Cheyenne Frontier Days Committee, Heels and the Buckle Club, SPEBSQSA, First United Methodist Church and the Lions Club.

Jim is survived by two of his three sons, Grant (Alice) and Kris; daughters-in-law, Janice Farris and Jane Phelps; seven grandchildren, Robin, Cord (Sarah), Sandi, Paige (Mark), Stefani (Tim), Brooke (Jamie), and Reid (Alexandria); amd eight great-grandchildren, Shelby, Gabriel, Christian, Elias, Thane, Isabel, Gralie and Hayden.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna, in 2004; his parents; his brother, Randle; and his son, Jay.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the Lakeview Chapel at Schrader, Aragon and Jacoby Funeral Home on Friday, June 29, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. A reception will immediately follow in the Schrader Reception Center.
