Obituary for Arthur Vernon "Art" Phillips

Arthur Vernon Phillips, 96, passed away at the V.A. Medical Center on January 31, 2018.

Art was born on May 17, 1921 in Melchert, Iowa to James and Nytha Phillips.

Art proudly served in the United States Marines during WWII from 1942 - 1945. He was a props and governor specialist on the Corsair airplane with the Black Sheep Squadron in the South Pacific. Art taught and coached in Cheyenne at East High School for more than 30 years. Art is the only coach to lead the Thunderbirds to its only state wrestling team title in 1965. Art loved to carve wood and was an avid fan of the Colorado Rockies and the Denver Broncos.

Art is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Shirley; three children, Nancy (Bob) Walsh, Lee (Brenda) Phillips and Scott (Kathy) Phillips; six grandchildren, Eric, Lisa, Braedon, Lara, Meghan and Kelly; four great-grandchildren, Easton, Quinn, Everly and Violette; and one brother, Jim (Ruth) Phillips.

Art was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; and a grandson, Tanner.

Funeral services will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church on Monday February 5, 2018. Viewing will begin at 10:00a.m. and the service will begin at 11:00a.m. with Pastor Alison George officiating. Private family interment will take place at a later date in Davenport, Nebraska.
