Obituary for Robert S. Tate

Robert S. Tate
Robert (Bob) S. Tate, Sr., 91, of Cheyenne passed away on September 6, 2016 at Davis Hospice Center.

Bob was born July 9, 1925 in Baltimore, MD, to Lawrence I. and Louise L. (Schoenfelder) Tate. He grew up in Leavenworth, KS. After graduating from Leavenworth High School Bob served four years as a U.S. Navy Seabee during World War II; he returned home and married his high school sweetheart, Shirley M. Hoins, on June 14, 1947. Bob and his brother operated Tate Bros. Brush Factory which was destroyed by the 1952 Missouri River flood. Bob retired from the U.S. Penitentiary in Leavenworth where he was superintendent of the brush factory.

Bob & Shirley traveled extensively throughout the U.S. exploring new roads (paved or unpaved) and happily transporting grandchildren. Bob loved fishing, hiking and camping; he volunteered with Boy Scouts for many years. A skilled swimmer, Bob fostered happy memories during water games at the Guards’ Club. A consummate woodworker, he completed many beautiful furniture projects.

Bob lived the Seabees motto “can do.” He was a gentleman until the end, answering nurses’ questions: “yes, ma’m; no, ma’m’”

Bob is survived by children Robert S. Tate, Jr., Kearney, MO, and Peggy Lush, Cheyenne, WY; grandchildren Heather (Michael) Powell, Robert W. Tate, Jean (Bret) Freudenthal and Alex Pouppirt; great-grandsons Caden, Trent, Pierce & Grayson; and his sister Alice Lough, Hermitage, MO.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Shirley Tate; and his brother Larney Tate.

Memorial contributions may be made to Davis Hospice Center, Cheyenne, WY, or The Seabee Museum and Memorial Park, Rhode Island at www.seabeesmuseum.com

Cremation has taken place; Celebration of Life will be held in Leavenworth, KS at a later date.
